Young, Robert L., "Gender, Region, of Socialization and Ownership of Protective Firearms," Rural Sociology, 51 (Summer, 1986), 169-182.

Abstract:

Women raised in the south are not only more likely to own firearms, but seem relatively unaffected by the situational factors that increase the likelihood of ownership among women from other parts of the U.S. Non-hunting women from the south own guns for a variety of reasons unrelated to crime, whereas those from outside the south own them primarily for protection from crime.
