Yang, Nan and McIntosh, Alex, "Military Experience and Tolerance: An Empirical Study of Tolerance of Veterans and Nonveterans," Paper presented to the American Sociological Association, San Francisco, 1989.

Abstract:

Contrary to many previous studies, respondents who had served on active duty appeared to be significantly more tolerant of either mixed target group-consisting of both left and right non-conformists groups - or of just left group, than those who never served. However, there is no difference in tolerance between those who had served and those who had not toward the right target group.
