Warr, Mark and Stafford, Mark, "Public Goals of Punishment and Support for the Death Penalty," Journal of Research in Crime and Delinquency, 21 (May, 1984), 95-111.
Abstract:
Retribution is chosen as the primary purpose of punishment. Preference for retribution increased with age but declined with educational attainment. Retributionists were most likely to favor the death penalty, but, contrary to popular belief, they constituted only a minority of those who supported capital punishment.
