Taylor, Humphrey, "Advocacy Polls: Hired Guns or Loose Cannons?" The Public Perspective, 1 (November/December, 1989), 41-42.

Abstract:

Polls are thus extremely susceptible to abuse by interest groups as questions with subtle wording changes can produce "favorable" results while neglecting different results in similar questions. Respondents to the GSS don't tend to believe too little is spent on welfare yet do tend to believe too little is being done for the poor.
