Rasinski, Kenneth A., Timberlake, Jeffrey M. and Lock, Eric D., "Question Wording Effects on Public Support for Social Spending on Drugs,” Paper presented to the American Association of Public Opinion Research, St. Petersburg Beach, May, 1999.

Abstract:

In most years, when asked about their opinions on government spending on drugs, Americans have expressed more support when the question has used the phrase “dealing with drug addiction” than when “drug rehabilitation” has been employed. The difference in citizen support for “dealing with drug addiction” and “drug rehabilitation” is related to the varying social and political ideologies of the respondents.
