Newman, Katherine S., Falling from Grace: The Experience of Downward Mobility in the American Middle Class. New York: The Free Press, 1988.
Abstract:
Upward mobility, the expectation of having more tomorrow than we have today, has for generations defined what it means to be an American. Yet today, that fundamental assumption is proving false for many. In the wake of contracting economic and social opportunities, one working American in five is being forced down the mobility ladder, earning less and suffering a severe loss of status and self-respect.
