Nelsen, Hart M., "Life Without Afterlife: Toward Congruency of Belief Across Generations," Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion, 20 (1981), 109-118.

Abstract:

There has been a long-range decline in belief in life after death, a short-range reversal (1944-1960), and a shift back to decline in the 1970s. The decline is especially strong for older respondents, while the 1960s reversal was found among the younger cohort. There are no longer any age differences in this belief.
