Abstract:
Despite holding some views counter to accepted scientific knowledge, the American public generally believes science to be a beneficial force in society, that scientific development is important for the future, and that America is a leader in scientific development. Accidents like Chernobyl and the Challenger mission have not eradicated such confidence completely.
