Ladd, Everett Carll Jr. and Lipset, Seymour Martin, "Anatomy of a Decade," Public Opinion, 3 (December/January, 1980), 2-9.

Abstract:

America has always embraced values of individualism and equality, which have had an uneasy balance. Liberalism, while prescribing equality, has often focused on the individual in government policies starting in the 1930s. While Americans still retain the value of equality and believe in government intervention, they are ambivalent about the government's ability to enact such outcomes.
