Ladd, Everett Carll, Jr., "Liberalism Upside Down: The Inversion of the New Deal Order," Political Science Quarterly, 91 (Winter, 1976-77), 577-600.

Abstract:

There has been a change since the New Deal in the socioeconomic backgrounds of those supporting American political parties. The high social strata now provide greater support for liberal candidates and policies--mainly people and programs associated with the Democratic party. This change is primarily a result of the growth of the professional stratum, while the working class has become increasingly middle class in its perspective.
