Ladd, Everett Carll, "The Brittle Mandate: Electoral Dealignment and the 1980 Presidential Election," Political Science Quarterly, 96 (Spring, 1981), 1-25.
Abstract:
The Republican victories of 1980 do not represent a realignment along party lines, but a "dealignment" from parties altogether. The Democrats' assertion that the Republican successes do not represent a new mandate is correct. However, neither is there a loyal Democratic coalition, but rather a populace responding every four years to presidential referenda.
