Jelen, Ted G., "Biblical Literalism and Inerrancy: Does the Difference Make a Difference?" Sociological Analysis, 49 (1989), 421-429.

Abstract:

White Protestants are unwilling or unable to discriminate between a question on Biblical literalism versus Biblical inerrancy. Doctrinal conservatives simply choose the most authoritative answer. Future research should either not distinguish between the two concepts in drawing conclusions if these questions are used or should adjust the question wording so that respondents can distinguish between the two concepts in their answers.
