Abstract:
American society is faced with the increasing difficulty of legislative institutions mediating among conflicting interests and resolving social and economic conflicts. Three master trends (in creasing political volatility, differentiation of social stratification, and changes in military participation) have set the stage for the political economy (stagflation, inflation, low productivity) and disarticulation of social institutions that characterize advanced industrial society.
