Jackson, David J. and Alwin, Duane F., "The Factor Analysis of Ipsative Measures," Sociological Methods and Research, 9 (November, 1980), 218-238.

Abstract:

A common factor model is developed for variables that have undergone an ipsative transformation. Application of this model may also be useful in modeling the latent content of sets of rankings and other measures that have the ipsative property as a result of measurement procedure, such as Kohn's measures of parental values.
