Haller, Max and Hoellinger, Franz, "Female Employment and the Change of Gender Roles: The Conflictual Relationship between Participation and Attitudes in International Comparison," International Sociology, 9 (March, 1994), 87-112.

Abstract:

A cross-national study of eight countries did not find support for the hypothesis that increased labor force participation of women is associated with more tolerant attitudes to women's roles in society. Gender role attitudes are shaped not only by social structural factors, but also by cultural factors, such as religious traditions.
