Fan, David P., Predictions of Public Opinion from the Mass Media: Computer Content Analysis and Mathematical Modeling. New York: Greenwood Press, 1988.

Abstract:

Public opinion can be predicted by monitoring the "messages" the public receives. A mathematical model is developed and tested on trends in American opinion on foreign policy, domestic, and economic issues. The media not only sets the agenda for public policy, but it may shape the agenda should the public rely on the media as a main source of information.
