Abstract:
While white Southerners have higher levels of gun ownership, there's little support that gun ownership is driven by a defensive, violent subculture. Conservative and racist southerners are marginally more likely to own guns, along with victims of violent attacks. Males, older and richer Southerners are also more likely to own guns.
