Darnell, Alfred T. and Gallaher, Harry E., "Federal Income Tax Popularity: A Time Series Analysis of the Political and Economic Determinants, 1947-1984," Paper presented to the American Sociological Association, New York City, August, 1986.
Abstract:
Using aggregate survey data collected between 1947 and 1984 on federal income taxes, one finds a general decrease over time in public satisfaction with the level of federal taxes. Factors that have significant effects on satisfaction are changes in the consumer price index, the unemployment rate, and changes in tax laws. No support is found in the data that public dissatisfaction with federal income taxes reflects a general unhappiness with the government.
