Abstract:

The 1980 election was not a surprise and does not indicate the demise of the Democratic Party: (1) the vote was a referendum on the incumbent; (2) the victory was not ideological; (3) the Iranian crisis and a faltering economy converged around election day; (4) results may signal a return to coattail party voting; (5) the election gave the Republicans a chance to achieve dominance in the 1980s.
