Aldous, Joan, "Family Change and Personal Happiness: Marital Status, Marital Duration, and Presence of Children as Factors," Paper presented to the American Sociological Association, Miami Beach, August, 1993.

Abstract:

While there is no clear trend in the last decades for the happiness of married people, married persons are happier than those who have never been married. Regardless of marital status, women are happier than men. (See also Glenn and Weaver 1988 No. 1051 and Lee, Seccombe and Shehan 1991 No. 1855??)
