Abramson, Paul R.; Aldrich, John H.; and Rohde, David W., Change and Continuity in the 1988 Elections. Washington, D.C.: Congressional Quarterly, 1990.

Abstract:

While the Republicans held the presidency in 1988, the Democrats maintained control of Congress. (As electoral voting has been volatile in the post WWII), the Republican position is tenuous, especially if the economy worsens, since party loyalties have weakened over decades. Recent Republican support may be monetary as there are little class, ethnic, or religious factors fueling it.
