Abstract:
Reagan's 1984 re election did not result from a conservative shift in the electorate's policy preferences, but from favorable performance evaluations and a shift in party loyalties. While the Democrats have lost their electoral base and are not the clear minority party, the Republicans are a majority party despite electoral gains. Regional differences in voting diminished in the 1984 national elections.
