Abstract:
Generational change can have a variety of effects on opinion trends. For example, while feelings of personal political efficacy have remained stable since the 1960's, feelings of governmental efficacy have declined. Political tolerance has risen since the 1950's but remained stable through the 1970's and 1980's, and a considerable percentage of Americans still express intolerant attitudes toward communists, atheists, and socialists.
